Every name gets a line, and on that line is every system, every folder, every permission, every level of access that name holds. I partition the report by team and send each lead their share, with one request: confirm this looks right.</p><p>The confirmations come back fast. A director with two dozen people under her signs off on all two dozen in less time than it took you to read that last sentence. She did not check. Checking properly would take her a full day she does not have, and she has a job (one she feels is more important than anyone else&#8217;s). She clicks approve, I take the approval, and I file it (because I have a job I feel is more important than anyone else&#8217;s).</p><p>When the auditor arrives, I hand over the file. It shows that access was reviewed by the responsible manager and confirmed appropriate. This is true. It was reviewed. It was confirmed. Whether it is actually appropriate is a separate matter, and the file has nothing to say about that.</p><p>This is a real part of what I do. I produce evidence that things are under control. We&#8217;re good over here, see, just look at this file. The evidence is genuine. It&#8217;s right there, signed by multiple parties, all of them functioning adults. The control is often theoretical. The distance between the two sits in a file I will hand to a stranger next quarter, again, as proof that everything is fine.</p><p>Gaddis wrote a thousand pages about this in 1955, decades before any system I run existed, called <em>The Recognitions</em>. It opens on a painter named Wyatt. His own paintings he cannot finish. Under an old master&#8217;s name, he finishes everything. He does not copy old paintings. He makes new ones, in the manner of the Flemish masters four hundred years dead, with such devotion that the experts study them and pronounce them genuine. Not convincing. Genuine. Down to the pigments he grinds by hand, from recipes as old as the men he&#8217;s imitating. The paintings are real in every way except that Wyatt was the one who held the brush, not van der Goes.</p><p>The forgery works because it survives the study. That is the entire mechanism. A fake nobody inspects is a bad painting, forgotten in an attic. A fake that clears the expert becomes an Old Master. Passing the examination is the last step in making the forgery real.</p><p>You already trust the certified thing. The green A in the restaurant window. The https:// lock in the address bar. The wall of five-star reviews at the mechanic&#8217;s. Each one means what my file means. Someone examined it and signed. And examination is the precise thing a good forgery is built to survive.</p><p>Next quarter I will hand the file to a stranger. R.]]></dc:creator><pubDate>Mon, 22 Jun 2026 19:11:54 GMT</pubDate><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span>Goose Camp,</span></p><p><span>Long time listener, first time writer, and all that.</span></p><p><span>I&#8217;ve listened every week since 2013. I did the math before writing this, on how many hours that is, and the total came out to be...a lot (lol). I was 17 or 18 when I found this podcast on my iPod Touch. I&#8217;m 31 now. In that time I have finished training in the Air Force, finished college, gotten married, had two kids, gotten divorced, moved across the country, and built my career in IT; through all of it the show kept arriving, completely indifferent to whatever I was doing. I find that genuinely comforting.</span></p><p><span>You don&#8217;t know me, which is most of the appeal. I get an hour a week with three people who have no idea I exist, no expectations of me, no follow-up questions, nothing. The Omega Cops are the most low-maintenance relationship I have. I&#8217;m cool keeping things one-sided, except for this one letter, after which we can go back to normal.</span></p><p><span>If you&#8217;re curious, of the crew, Justin is the one I play the most like. I&#8217;ve got huge hours in Counter Strike, which I know isn&#8217;t the perfect cup of tea for anyone here, but I&#8217;ve put the same kind of time into World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings Online and most of the things Justin gets excited about. I don&#8217;t remember the exact episode Justin had first brought up Dwarf Fortress...but that sent me down a months long rabbit hole, that then opened up an entirely new gaming interest (really difficult ass video games).</span></p><p><span>The thing I didn&#8217;t expect is how much the show leaks into the rest of my week. I cannot walk past a pinball machine anymore without conducting a full unsolicited appraisal of it, which is entirely Sam&#8217;s fault. It&#8217;s fun seeing the wear and tear from pizza grease, and thinking about the times some of these machines have seen. Pre-2013, I&#8217;m not sure I would have really played any kind of pinball. However, after this last IGN live in June, I&#8217;m heavily considering a Stern Pokemon pinball machine for my home. <br><br>My kids and I play video game 20-questions now...they aren&#8217;t very good, but it&#8217;s fun when they shout guesses (they mostly guess Minecraft or Spider-Man lol). GameScoop doesn&#8217;t really just sit in the background of my week; I look forward to it, bring up topics and episodes in conversation with colleagues and friends...hell, I get movie and show suggestions from yall, that I then spend time watching and considering.</span></p><p><span>Here&#8217;s the part I actually want to say, since I&#8217;ve got the floor. I admire that you keep doing this. Every week, for years, three people show up and make a good episode about something they clearly still love, and somehow it hasn&#8217;t curdled into a job they&#8217;re tired of. I think that&#8217;s rare. Not every day is easy, I&#8217;m sure, but you deliver nonetheless. I work in a field where enthusiasm has a half-life (pun intended), where people start young and strong, but time takes it&#8217;s toll, and attitudes towards our profession often sour; watching a group sustain actual affection for what they do, on a deadline, week after week, is the kind of thing I look up to. We&#8217;re not too far off in age, but I hope to find that same enthusiasm for work when I grow up!</span></p><p><span>I&#8217;m not writing to ask for anything. There&#8217;s no request buried at the bottom of this (maybe a video game 20-questions suggestion). I just thought that after thirteen years of one-way traffic, the least I could do was send a signal back across the void, so that for one week the math is slightly less lopsided. On Friday, Elon Musk&#8217;s rocket company went public, a bell rang on the Nasdaq, and by the closing figure one man was worth more than a trillion dollars. He is now richer than the next several billionaires combined, and his personal hoard is larger than the annual output of Sweden. This had never happened before in recorded history. It happened on a Friday, between lunch and the evening news. </p><p>The second is that we took a man&#8217;s name off a building. Last December, a board of trustees stocked with the president&#8217;s allies voted to rename the Kennedy Center after him, so that the nation&#8217;s memorial to a murdered president, now also advertised a living one. A federal judge ruled that this was not theirs to do. So on Friday night a crew arrived, raised scaffolding against the marble, draped the scaffolding in tarp so no one could watch, and in the dark hours unscrewed the letters one at a time. A few thousand gathered in the night, while tens of thousands more watched a livestream. Not of the removal, which was hidden. Of the scaffolding.</p><p>The third is that tomorrow, for his eightieth birthday, the president is hosting a cage fight on the South Lawn of the White House. A temporary arena has gone up on the grass. Two men will fight for a championship belt while four thousand guests watch from the lawn where presidents have held state dinners and Easter egg rolls. The weigh-ins were at the Lincoln Memorial, where fighters were drunk and throwing up. George R. R. Martin couldn't have wrote this scene better.</p><p>The Romans had words for two of these.</p><p>The unnaming is called damnatio memoriae, the condemnation of memory. When an emperor disgraced himself past saving, the Senate could vote him out of the historical record, and stonemasons would go up to the arches and the triumphal columns and chisel his name out of the stone, leaving a clean blank where a god had been. It was not a riot. It was a procedure. It was proposed, it was voted, and then a man with a chisel made a Tuesday of it. History, indeed, repeats itself.</p><p>The birthday is called panem et circenses. Bread and circuses. The reliable old instinct that a population can be kept content with food and a show, and that there is no show more dependable than two men hurting each other in front of a crowd. The Romans staged theirs in a stadium. We are staging ours in the president&#8217;s yard. The bread is beer. And, unlike the Roman spectators of the time, Trump's attendees will have to pay for their fill. </p><p>For the trillionaire they had no word, because even Rome would have found it indecent for one man to privately hold more wealth than several of its provinces. That part is ours alone. How neat.</p><p>We will be told that the first fact has buried the other two. That the money has already won, that the courts are scenery, that the chisel is sentimental and the man with more money than Sweden is the only thing that is real. Maybe.</p><p>But notice what people actually did. Nobody stayed up until three in the morning to watch a man become a trillionaire. That took a single second and a bell. They stayed up, in the dark, refreshing a livestream of an empty tarp, to watch the slow and frequently useless machinery of a republic do the one boring thing it had been ordered to do, which was take the name of the usurper of the wall.</p><p>That is the whole country in one weekend. A man who cannot be touched, one crowd stayed awake all night to watch a name come down anyway, while another fiddles with beer and circuses to celebrate him. I&#8217;d been in LA for a few weeks, staying with family while the two of us were taking a break to think, and I was heading home to patch it back together. An inflight text says my bag didn&#8217;t make the trip. It&#8217;ll ship to South Bend tomorrow. Great. My car and house keys are in that bag, which leaves me locked out of my car and stranded at O&#8217;Hare, two hours from home. I pull out my phone and call my wife. Well&#8230;I think she&#8217;s my wife. No answer. I call again. No response. I text her: long story short, my keys are in my bag and the bag&#8217;s headed to South Bend, can you leave the house unlocked, I&#8217;m going to Uber home but it&#8217;ll be late when I get. I love you, I love the kids, I&#8217;ll see you soon. </p><p>No answer. That confirms two things:</p><p>She definitely isn&#8217;t my wife. It&#8217;s the clean slate everyone swears they&#8217;d take if they got the chance, the fantasy of burning everything down and building something new. Deforestation for the soul. I&#8217;d just been handed a clean slate for real. Except a clean slate only counts as freedom if you can remember what used to be on it, and that&#8217;s the part I&#8217;ve never managed. Most of my past was gone long before she was. As I write this, I&#8217;m a few weeks short of 31, and already whole stretches of my life have turned to fog. Larger stretches than that burned to the ground.</p><p>The fog has an origin I can vaguely point to. I went to half a dozen elementary schools before the fourth grade. I was passed around, to and from parents and grandparents, where money was generationally thin. I was one more mouth on a grocery bill that already didn&#8217;t add up, and I knew it. We moved and moved, and I still couldn&#8217;t tell you why. I know some of the places had the kind of damp that settles in your chest, because I was sick more than I wasn&#8217;t. Beyond that it&#8217;s all secondhand, scraps that blew out a motel window somewhere in Southern Indiana and are just...gone. Deforested and never regrown.</p><p>For most people, the forgetting has a floor. The early years are blurry, then they sharpen and stay in focus, and you become you. My &#8216;forgetting&#8217; seemingly, doesn&#8217;t have a floor. The fog never lifted. It started in childhood and kept right on going. It took high school. It took the military. Now it&#8217;s working through college and the years since, taking them faster than I can get them down.</p><p>I&#8217;m an engineer. I build systems and run math I learned while the fog ate the rest. Whatever you&#8217;re picturing, some shuffling, confused man, that isn&#8217;t it. I trust processes. My pillars of belief are made up of science and philosophy. I trust that the thing deleting me is doing it for a reason, the way I trust any process that&#8217;s been tested and proven. Then there&#8217;s the human half, which doesn&#8217;t care about the reason. I get jealous when other people recall their childhoods with ease. And when I go looking for my own, some happy afternoon from when I was a kid, I come back empty.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" family. That night at the airport is one of the clearer things I can still call up, probably because it&#8217;s where everything split into before and after. I can make my peace with most of it. The system can have my childhood, the service, college, the years with her, and I won&#8217;t ask for any of it back. The fog is still moving forward. It&#8217;s working on the present now.</p><p>Every weekend I get with my kids is already marked for deletion. Every hike, every birthday, every holiday, I&#8217;m completely present, and every one of them will trail off into the fog with the rest. I&#8217;m building my kids a childhood I won&#8217;t get to keep. I don&#8217;t get much of it to begin with, just the gaps a custody schedule leaves. The fog takes even that.</p><p>Someday they&#8217;ll be grown, and they&#8217;ll tell me about an afternoon we had together, one they loved, and I&#8217;ll have to take their word for it. I&#8217;ll envy their memories the way I envy everyone&#8217;s. Except these will be memories of me. How strange&#8230;</p><p>Living without a past teaches you what one is for. Having a past is the thing you navigate by, how you keep from making the same mistake twice, how you recognize a road you&#8217;ve already been down. Most people steer by theirs without noticing. I&#8217;ve been going blind, and I only know it from where I&#8217;ve ended up. Making generational judgement calls. Maybe with a childhood to check myself against, I&#8217;d have read a few things sooner, and I&#8217;d be at their breakfast table instead of two thousand miles west of it. I can only tell you what a past is for, from a position that doesn&#8217;t have one. </p><p>And lemme tell ya, not having one kinda sucks. So hold on to those childhood memories if you got em. They could be what set you straight later on. I hold the principle that the majority of you are morons, mostly, except for me and the small handful of people I associate with, among whom I&#8217;m still a teentsy bit smarter than the rest. And why shouldn&#8217;t I be? I read. I write. I play chess. I have a bachelor&#8217;s degree. I listen critically and I put my shopping cart back. What is being smarter, really, if not just being better? My dearest reader, I&#8217;m a better person than you are. It&#8217;s true, and I hope you&#8217;re not offended.</p><p>I read. I haven&#8217;t finished Infinite Jest, true, and I have read every Harry Potter book more times than JKR herself, but I read. Reading is the credential. Last week I finished a novel that won an award and I&#8217;ve already mentioned it to three people, two of whom I&#8217;m sure didn&#8217;t ask. I am the kind of person who reads.</p><p>I write. Not professionally. Not well, if we&#8217;re being technical. But I write, which puts me in the same broad category as Proust, and Gaddis, and McCarthy, and King and...</p><p>I play chess. I might play like an 1100 elo on a good day, which I&#8217;ve been told is exactly the rating at which a player thinks they&#8217;re better than they are. That tracks for everyone else at 1100. I&#8217;m actually pretty good against my friends.</p><p>I have a bachelor&#8217;s degree. B average, completed in three years with two years of summer school. A bachelor&#8217;s is the participation trophy of higher education, sure, but a participation trophy is still a trophy and you don&#8217;t have one. Or you do. I&#8217;m assuming things about you because we haven&#8217;t met and I prefer it that way.</p><p>I put my shopping cart back. You probably do too. I do it with intention.</p><p>You may be noticing that none of this is impressive. I don&#8217;t read the cornerstones in their original language and I don&#8217;t read most of them at all; my writings are mostly personal grievances dressed up as astute observations; the chess is bad, almost always; the degree is unremarkable; and the cart is the bare minimum of being a person in society. And yet I walk around with the steady certainty, tip of my nose pointed straight up, that I&#8217;m sharper than the woman who cut me off on the freeway; sharper than the guy at the coffee shop ordering something obnoxious; sharper than the colleague who got promoted instead of me because of office politics, surely.</p><p>I am not sharper than any of them. I am, statistically, average. I have been told I&#8217;m smart by people who love me and by no one else. I&#8217;ve given and gotten pity handshakes and &#8220;well dones&#8221; that are simply a stroke of both egos involved.</p><p>We all do this. You do this. You&#8217;re doing it right now. You&#8217;ve been reading along, half-amused, half-irritated, thinking &#8220;what an insufferable cunt, I&#8217;m glad I&#8217;m not that self-righteous.&#8221; That little flick of superiority, the one you feel toward the person who thinks their superior, is the whole thing. The writer of this essay is a clown, and you noticed, because you&#8217;re smarter than the writer. Of course you are. Everyone in this essay is the smartest person in the room they&#8217;re standing in, and the room has one chair, and they&#8217;re all sitting in it.</p><p>I don&#8217;t have a way out of this. Recognizing the trap is another way of being inside it. Look at me, recognizing things. Look at you, recognizing me recognizing things. There&#8217;s no floor under any of this.</p><p>My dearest reader, I&#8217;m smarter than you, and you&#8217;re smarter than me, and we are both smarter than the people we&#8217;ll think about on the drive home. None of us are smart. We&#8217;re all average, and we all believe we&#8217;re the exception. The honest thing I can offer is that I know this about myself and still can&#8217;t stop doing it, which makes me, fine, no smarter than you after all. As every 10 year old in the early 2000s, I was busy, of course. My friends and I often kept full agendas; watching and reporting back on Yu-Gi-Oh like chatty ladies in a book club; playing Halo: Combat Evolved on our parents original Xbox; or getting sopping wet in the muddy creek by my old house. I wasn&#8217;t privy to Zelda in my early years. I did grow up with Nintendo by way of a Game Boy Color, GameCube, Game Boy Advance SP, and, eventually, a DS I prized for years. However, I was partial to the Kanto region, Mario Kart maps, and spent hundreds of hours with the Namco Museum collection. Picking up Zelda: The Minish Cap in the big, bustling 2026, made me feel nostalgic for something I never experienced.</p><p>That feeling caught me off guard. It is a strange kind of nostalgia, longing for something you never actually lived through. The hand drawn pixel art, Link&#8217;s &#8220;HYAH!,&#8221; the small Minish Villiage. None of it belonged to my childhood, and yet all of it felt familiar. I think that is what good craft does. It borrows a memory you did not know you had and hands it back to you.</p><p>I should note, playing these esport level games is a significant part of my life. I think I&#8217;ve put nearly 3,000 hours into CS2 in the last 24 months or so. In terms of awareness of the culture that is competitive FPS gaming, I&#8217;m no &#8216;noob.&#8217; Most of my gaming time over the years has gone to Counter-Strike and similar hyper competitive, twitchy shooters. As a kid, once I got an Xbox 360, thousands upon thousands of hours were dedicated to Halo 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I love it. I love the grind and fine tuning the tiny particulars casuals don&#8217;t even consider. But it is a specific kind of love. These types of games are sharp and fast and unforgiving. Every round is a small audition, and the audience is not only your team, but yourself. You play well or you let your team down (and yourself), and the line between the two is often measured by individual decisions. There is nothing cozy about it.</p><p>The Minish Cap is the opposite of that, and I did not realize how much I needed the opposite until I sat down with it. There is no bomb to defuse, or &#8220;audition&#8221; to be had. The only standard to be met is one of my own, and that standard is simply to keep going, and pay attention. When I get stuck on a puzzle, the game waits. It does not punish me for thinking slowly. It rewards me for thinking at all. Whereas, the mistakes made in a hypercompetitive environment, are often compounded and amplified by the same internal auditions your teammates and opponents are going through. Simply put...if you mess up in CS, your teammates, enemies, and spectators alike will all let you know! Doesn&#8217;t that sound cozy!? No? It&#8217;s not, it&#8217;s usually a bummer and one that, overtime, can really dampen and sour the hobby.</p><p>What surprised me most was how complete playing Minish Cap felt. I had always treated art, sound, and mechanics as separate things you could grade on separate scales. Playing this game made me see them as one thing. The music tells you how a dungeon should feel before you understand why. The way you shrink down and walk among the Minish changes the scale of the whole world and makes things cozier and warmer. The depth of the puzzles kept reminding me the developers made this game for everyone. None of these pieces are showing off. They are just working together, quietly, toward a single experience.</p><p>I think I had forgotten that games could be experiences and not just performances. Slowing down with an old puzzler reminded me. Every time I turned it on, I felt something settle. Not to use a cliche, but it was like the world slowed down around me. Playing Minish Cap was a very good brain cleanser, and it&#8217;s what I needed. Not the adrenaline of clutching a 1v5 or acing a round, but the calm of a small problem I was allowed to solve at my own pace.</p><p>It taught me that the work I respect most is the work that disappears into the whole. And it taught me this: for years I played to an audience, even in an empty room. Minish Cap had none. No audition, no scoreboard, no one keeping count but me. It turns out that is not a smaller way to spend an evening. A divorce behind me, my kids in another state, and a studio apartment I&#8217;d signed a lease on sight unseen. I didn&#8217;t know the city. I didn&#8217;t know many people. What I had was my car, my phone, and the specific kind of energy that shows up when everything you built falls apart and you decide, for reasons you can&#8217;t fully explain, to keep going anyway.</p><p>So I drove.</p><p>I wasn&#8217;t commuting anywhere specific, or running errands to kill time. I drove the way some people journal or pray or drink. I&#8217;d pull up the address of wherever I needed to be (usually some overlook or trailhead far off in the Angeles Forest), tap &#8220;avoid highways,&#8221; and let the city unspool itself one surface street at a time. The freeway is a skip button. Los Angeles&#8217;s infrastructure was one of the first in America purpose-built for cars; the 101, the 5, the 405 are all ways to circumvent the uniqueness of this bubble. LA&#8217;s vehicular arteries take you outside the neighborhoods and drop you at your destination without asking you to look at anything. I wanted to look. I needed to. If I was going to rebuild a life here, I was going to do it with my eyes open and the windows down.</p><p>Some nights I didn&#8217;t need a destination at all. 3:00 AM, I&#8217;d slide on my Birkenstocks, grab my keys, and just go. Up into the canyons where the roads narrow and the guardrails disappear and the only light is whatever your headlights carve out of the dark. Mulholland at 3 AM is a different road than Mulholland at noon. The tourists are gone. The bumper to bumper bustle is absent. The views are the same, but they belong to you now, because nobody else showed up to claim them. I&#8217;d pull over somewhere with the engine rapping and sit on the hood and look out at the grid of The Valley floor. I became wholly aware that each twinkling light was some kind of dwelling that homed a person. And that person homed their entire existence, thoughts, experiences. And I was just there on the side of a mountain, observing the dwellings, observing infinite thoughts.</p><p>It wasn&#8217;t peace, exactly. It was motion. It was the feeling that as long as I was moving, I was doing something. I wasn&#8217;t sitting in my studio replaying conversations or doing the math on how many days until I&#8217;d see my kids again. I was learning a city. I was collecting intersections and landmarks and the particular way certain blocks smelled at certain hours. Jasmine at dusk in Los Feliz around the Skylight Theatre and bookstore. Exhaust and grease near the body shops in North Hollywood. Wet pavement on Sunset after the street sweepers passed, cleaning up needles and debris. Los Angeles is a city you learn with your nose as much as your eyes, and I didn&#8217;t know that yet. I was still cataloging.</p><p>I drove through neighborhoods I really had no business in; Apple Maps doesn&#8217;t tell you who lives in these places, just that they aren&#8217;t the freeway. Strip malls and taco stands and gated communities and blocks where every house had bars on the windows and blocks where every house had a fountain in the yard. I wasn&#8217;t making judgments. I wasn&#8217;t comparing. I was just absorbing the textures of the world around me before the mundane routine set in and the city would start to blur past me again. Using all my senses to map out my own pocket of Los Angeles.</p><p>That&#8217;s how I found them. Not because I was looking. Because I was breathing.</p><p>The neighborhood didn&#8217;t have a sign. None of them really do, in LA. You don&#8217;t cross a border so much as you feel one. The pavement gets smoother. The sidewalks widen. Trees and shrubbery become manicured and purposeful. The streetlights are spaced further apart and somehow softer, like the city itself agreed to dim out of respect for the wealthy. I&#8217;d been on autopilot, somewhere west of where I started, when the air changed.</p><p>I rolled the window the rest of the way down without thinking about it. Whatever I was smelling, I had never smelled before. It was sweet, but not the cloying sweet of chemicals. It was heavier than jasmine, more confident and potent in the air. It almost felt sticky in the nostrils in a way I didn&#8217;t mind. The kind of smell that makes you slow down, both literally and in your head.</p><p>I pulled over on a side street. Cut the engine. Just sat there.</p><p>The houses were old, and in this part of the country &#8216;old&#8217; means money, a lot of it: intricate ironclad gates, mature trees, hedges so dense they read more like walls. I couldn&#8217;t see the modern castles through them. I could only smell what was growing inside. Whatever it was, it was everywhere. Every yard, every block, the same scent layered on itself until the air felt less like air and more like a room someone had perfumed and forgotten to ventilate. It was 4 AM and I was sitting in my car in a neighborhood that smelled like a wedding.</p><p>I didn&#8217;t know what it was yet. I knew only that I had stumbled into something that felt private. That the city I had been driving through for months had another room in it, and that someone had left the door open by accident.</p><p>I drove home, slightly dazed. Maybe like one does after getting bad news.</p><p>The next day I started searching. Phrases I half-remembered. &#8220;Sweet flower LA.&#8221; &#8220;White flowering tree wealthy neighborhood.&#8221; It took an embarrassing number of attempts before I landed on the word: gardenia. Then I went down the rest of the rabbit hole. Gardenia jasminoides. Native to East Asia. Notoriously difficult to grow. Sensitive to soil pH, humidity, sun exposure. They demand attention. They reward it with an aroma that real estate listings actually advertise as a feature, the way they advertise marble countertops or canyon views. Simply put...I found them to be a rich person&#8217;s flower.</p><p>And then the part that stayed with me. Certain LA neighborhoods have curated landscaping. Some by HOA, some by historical preservation societies, some by city tree programs that designate &#8220;signature species&#8221; for specific blocks (only on the most prestigious roads though). Streets are purposely shaped to enhance the views or obscure the property. Trees are dedicated. People sit on boards and decide what the air should smell like, three houses down from where they live.</p><p>I sat with that idea for a while.</p><p>It wasn&#8217;t anger. It was something quieter and more disorienting. I had spent months telling myself I was learning Los Angeles, that I was seeing it the way you have to, slow and at street level, with my senses doing the work. And maybe I was. But there was another layer of the city I had been driving past without realizing it, a layer that wasn&#8217;t hidden from me, exactly, but wasn&#8217;t built for me either. The dense hedges that enclose the castles weren&#8217;t there to keep me out. They were just tall.</p><p>I kept driving after that. Of course. But I noticed things I hadn&#8217;t noticed before. The way certain streets had matching tree canopies. The way certain blocks smelled like nothing, but then others were an entire rosebush of delicacy. The way the air itself seemed to be telling me, very politely, that I was passing through.</p><p>I went back to these neighborhoods, eventually. Not on purpose at first. Just rerouting through them. Then on purpose. A couple of times a week, deliberately. I&#8217;d pick a destination on the far side of the gardenia neighborhood and let the route take me through, slowing down when the air thickened.</p><p>The smell never got smaller. That surprised me. I thought my nose would adjust the way you become blind to a candle in your own home after a time; the way novelty always softens into background. It didn&#8217;t. Every time I rolled through, it was still there, still confident, still a room I wasn&#8217;t in. Even today, I swear I can catch a whiff of a gardenia the second its pungent sweetness hits the air. My nose, almost cartoonishly, turns up to the aroma.</p><p>I started thinking about what I was actually doing.</p><p>I am someone who has always wanted more. That isn&#8217;t a confession. I&#8217;m not embarrassed by it. It is what it is, and always has been. It&#8217;s the engine that pulled me through a childhood I don&#8217;t remember, through a marriage that ended in betrayal, through a cross-country move I made on two weeks&#8217; notice with no plan and no people and no idea what kind of life I was building. Forward motion is how I adapt. It&#8217;s the closest thing I have to a religion. As long as I am moving, I am working toward something, and the version of me that fell apart in the past isn&#8217;t the version smelling the flowers at 3 AM.</p><p>That energy got me to Los Angeles. It got me the beautiful apartment, the car, the career, the routine. It got me through the math of the days. Through the lonely tears at night. And for the first time in my life, an unstoppable force met an immovable object. An idea:</p><p>You can&#8217;t work harder than a hedge.</p><p>You can&#8217;t earn your way into the air. Or, you can, but the price is not denominated in any currency I have access to, and pretending otherwise is just wasting time (time wasting, perhaps the biggest crime). The neighborhood was not going to open its door because I worked harder. There was no harder. There was no door. There was a smell, and there were people who lived inside it, and there was me, in the street, with the window down. That&#8217;s it.</p><p>That was the part that broke something. Not the wealth. Not the unfairness. The recognition that wanting more, which had been the only strategy I&#8217;d ever needed, had a ceiling I couldn&#8217;t see until I bumped my head on it. Some things in this life will not be mine. Not because I failed. Because the room is full.</p><p>The smell of gardenias introduced a world that is unattainable, but also unlocked another idea:</p><p>It&#8217;s okay.</p><p>I don&#8217;t mean that in the surly, &#8220;admitting defeat so I can hurry up and move on&#8221; kind of way. I mean it. It&#8217;s okay. The gardenias are not for me. Whole categories of life are not for me. For us. I will pass through them like neighborhoods on my way to a trail. I will catch them through the window while I run errands. I will know what they smell like, and I will keep going.</p><p>I still want more. Of course. I will probably want more on the day I die. But somewhere in between the first time I smelled the air change and the hundredth time I rerouted to find it again, I think I figured out that wanting and having are different appetites.</p><p>So this wasn&#8217;t an essay about gardenias.</p><p>It was an essay about the moment I learned the shape of my own ceiling, in a city I came to in order to escape my own collapse, on a midnight street that didn&#8217;t know I was there. The flower was just the messenger. The message was for me.</p><p>I drove home that night, as I do every night since, where the air in my own neighborhood smells like piss and asphalt and the subway station. Not gardenias. And it is mine. R.]]></dc:creator><pubDate>Fri, 08 May 2026 20:50:18 GMT</pubDate><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I recently overheard a conversation that solidified an idea I&#8217;ve been turning over for a while. Before I step into the headwind of where this goes, I want to set the scene.</p><p>I was at a busy theater off Wilshire, waiting for a show to start. Standing in line for the bathroom, I caught the two people behind me mid-sentence.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m watching this new series, it&#8217;s really good. It&#8217;s based off an older movie, <em>Lord of the Flies</em>. Have you seen it?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Yeah, isn&#8217;t <em>Lord of the Flies</em> that fairytale about the kids?&#8221;</p><p>Listen. I try to stay informed. I know about the decline of American literacy. I also suspect that whatever literacy figures get reported are under-representative of the actual problem, because the actual problem hides in plain sight. </p><p>The average American looks fine. He gets up, gets to work, holds down a job that is genuinely complex on paper. He fills out the forms in front of him. He makes the calls. He hits the deliverables. The trouble is that filling out a form and understanding a form are different acts. Ask the average person to explain what a form he has signed a dozen times actually means, what it is for, what he has agreed to by signing it; can he do it? No, probably not. And worse, he doesn&#8217;t want to. The mechanism behind a thing isn&#8217;t interesting to him. It&#8217;s a step in a workflow. Do the step, move on. The competence is real. The comprehension isn&#8217;t even attempted.</p><p>So when I heard <em>Lord of the Flies</em>, the book I dissected cover to cover in AP English, the book I wrote thousands of words on about the dichotomy of childhood innocence and the rooted evil in man, casually flattened into a fairytale, what hit me wasn&#8217;t surprise. It was confirmation. The decline isn&#8217;t coming. It&#8217;s here. And it&#8217;s steep.</p><p>This paper isn&#8217;t about American literacy, though. It&#8217;s about my interpretation of ignorance, intelligence, and wisdom.</p><p>I laughed at first. Honestly, what the hell? How do you not know <em>Lord of the Flies</em>? But the laugh thinned out fast, because to him, <em>Lord of the Flies</em> is a fairytale. If that&#8217;s how he has understood it, then that&#8217;s what it is to him. His ignorance, almost certainly born of poor literacy, has reshaped a culturally foundational story about the rot inside human nature into something kids should fall asleep to.</p><p>That framing extends past one book.</p><p>Ignorance enforces certain beliefs. More importantly, it enhances the belief of what&#8217;s possible. It manufactures hope. The less you understand the structure of the world, the more freely your mind gets to roam inside of it.</p><p>Take the most American thing there is: the American Dream. To anyone wise, it has always been propaganda. It was never real. The idea that anyone can be anything they want is woven into the literal fabric of American identity, and to believe it sincerely is the same act of misreading as believing <em>Lord of the Flies</em> is a fairytale. Both depend on a systemic failure, not a personal one. People aren&#8217;t taught to read past the surface, so they don&#8217;t.</p><p>Those who do manage to make a tear in the fabric, even a small one, can see the threads it&#8217;s woven from. And once you see the threads, you see they&#8217;re far too thick to rip through. There are limits. Real ones. Limits to ability, to access, to influence, to intelligence itself. The dream was never that you could do anything. The dream was that you&#8217;d never look closely enough to find out you couldn&#8217;t.</p><p>This is where I want to draw a line between intelligence and wisdom, because they&#8217;re often treated as the same thing, and they aren&#8217;t.</p><p>Intelligent people make incredibly stupid decisions all the time. There are doctors, engineers, lawyers, PhDs with the cranial horsepower to model a problem ten different ways in their specialty, who still arrive, smiling, at the conclusion that their own life is somehow exempt from the rules they can describe in detail. Intelligence is the engine. Wisdom is knowing what the engine is for and where it shouldn&#8217;t be driven. Plenty of people have one without the other.</p><p>The reverse is also true, and it&#8217;s the part Americans seem allergic to admitting: a person&#8217;s career does not define his intellectual ability, and it definitely doesn&#8217;t define his wisdom. A man swapping tires on a street in Bakersfield can have a clearer read on how the world actually works than a hedge fund analyst pulling seven figures in Manhattan. Wisdom isn&#8217;t allocated by salary. The mechanic has been forced to look at the threads. The analyst has been paid, handsomely, to look away. Can we find blame in either?</p><p>So what is it that lets a person see through the fabric? Intelligence, or wisdom? I keep landing on wisdom, because intelligence alone clearly isn&#8217;t enough. The smartest people I know still believe some version of the dream about themselves, even after watching it fail for everyone else. I&#8217;ve witnessed incredibly smart colleagues box themselves in with possibilities, only to be shunted by real circumstances that, to them, were unforeseen. Wisdom is the thing that turns the same set of facts into a different conclusion. Wisdom is the part that says: the rules apply to me, too.</p><p>And here&#8217;s the uncomfortable part. The people on the other side of that wisdom are, I think, slightly less happy.</p><p>Hope isn&#8217;t a feeling. Hope is a belief in possibility, and possibility runs on ignorance of constraint. If you believe the world is your oyster, you wake up looking for the pearl. If you&#8217;ve counted the oysters, read the report on how few of them ever held one, and watched the people around you come up empty year after year, you wake up tired. The ignorant person gets to hope because he doesn&#8217;t know what waits past hope. He doesn&#8217;t know that, more often than not, what&#8217;s past hope is nothing. Or more hardship. Or the same hardship in a different shape. Or just more of the same reality, good or bad.</p><p>The wise person knows. And knowing costs him.</p><p>Hope, in the way it gets sold in this country, is almost always a story about possibility plus action. Want it. Work for it. Get it. But sometimes the possibilities aren&#8217;t there. Sometimes there is no action you can take that will matter. Sometimes the threads are too thick, the limits are too real, and the most honest thing a person can do is sit quietly with the fact that the story he was sold doesn&#8217;t have his ending in it. There can be relief and a feeling of contentment found in the solidarity that this is it.</p><p>That isn&#8217;t an idea Americans are conditioned to hold. It&#8217;s not patriotic. It doesn&#8217;t sell anything. It doesn&#8217;t get you invited back to the function. So most people, even the ones who could see it if they tried, don&#8217;t try. And the ones who couldn&#8217;t see it even if they did try, the ones whose literacy and education and exposure have left them genuinely unable to interpret the country they live in, they get something the rest of us don&#8217;t. The lights stay on inside the fairytale. They get real hope.</p><p>Which, looking back, is what bothered me most about that conversation in the bathroom line.</p><p>He wasn&#8217;t wrong.</p><p><em>Lord of the Flies</em> is a fairytale to him. The American Dream is real to him. The world is his oyster, the pearls are guaranteed, and the only thing between him and any future he can picture is, presumably, a little more effort. A few more hours worked. That misreading is the gift. That misreading is what lets him wake up tomorrow and try again and again and again.</p><p>Fairytales end with rescue. The wolf dies. The witch burns. The children go home. The point of <em>Lord of the Flies</em>, the actual point, is that the rescue <em>is</em> the horror. A naval officer steps onto the beach and the boys finally see what they have become. The tragedy isn&#8217;t on the island. It&#8217;s in the moment they have to look at themselves through someone else&#8217;s eyes. They tear the fabric and see the threads.</p><p>For most of America, the ship never comes. The fabric never tears. They live, and they die, inside the bedtime story, filled with hope.</p><p>And honestly, between the two of us in that bathroom line, I&#8217;m not sure who gets the better deal. To conclude with a paradox: I&#8217;m hopeful to live a life of wisdom.</p><p></p><p></p><p>Note: I do want to step outside of this paper and clarify that this is not a philosophical stance where I&#8217;ve carefully steeped my claims into arguments and counterarguments. I haven&#8217;t earned my claims through referencing other thinkers and definitions. A new matcha shop, opening in Burbank. Clean green-and-cream branding, the now-standard hand-whisk-and-bowl photo, a soft-launch date and an Instagram handle. I had no reaction to it, which is what I want to talk about.</p><p>A year ago I would have noticed a new matcha shop. Two years ago I would have made a mental note to try it. Now they show up on my feed often enough that I scroll past them the way you scroll past the horribly AI generated, fake App Store games; the brand is different, the visual is (sometimes) different, but the category has become invisible to me through repetition. The up and coming shop in Burbank is not the first new matcha shop I&#8217;ve seen advertised this month. It&#8217;s probably not the fifth. I don&#8217;t even remember its name.</p><p>What made me stop was realizing that I could not, off the top of my head, tell you which matcha shop is supposed to be the best one. Every &#8220;Top 10 Matcha Spots in LA&#8221; list I&#8217;ve read in the last year has been a different ten. Sometimes there is overlap on the obvious anchors, Tea Master in Little Tokyo, Kettl in Los Feliz, but past those, the lists go their separate ways. They do this not because the writers disagree but because the inventory of shops has gotten bigger than any one writer can keep up with. What interests me is matcha as a storefront. The specific decision that someone, in 2025 or 2026, is signing a lease and writing a check and ordering a hand-whisk and a $10,000 espresso machine for the coffee drinkers they&#8217;re going to grudgingly serve on the side, hedging against the bet they&#8217;ve already made. The shop sells matcha, but the espresso machine is there because they know matcha alone might not be enough. That hedge is the tell. It is the sound of an operator who has looked at the cultural moment and decided that this is the right time to plant a flag in it, while quietly buying insurance against the moment passing. I think most of those flags are not going to be there in 2030. I want to spend the rest of this essay explaining why.</p><h4>2. Before It Was a Fad</h4><p>The first matcha shop in Los Angeles that anyone still remembers opened in Little Tokyo in 2014. Tea Master is in a strip mall on East 2nd Street, next to a sushi restaurant, with a laminated menu and two outdoor tables. There is no seating inside. The matcha is whisked to order. A latte costs about six dollars, which is two to three dollars less than what most of the shops you&#8217;ll read about later in this essay charge for the same drink. They also make a matcha soft serve that is cause for lines on most days. There is almost always a line. Tea Master has been there for twelve years, has never opened a second location, has not been written about in Vogue, and shows no sign of going anywhere. Even their online store, where they sell matcha powders and teas, is regularly sold out. It is, by every measure that should matter to someone thinking about whether to open a matcha shop, the most successful matcha shop in the city.</p><p>What&#8217;s interesting about Tea Master is that nobody opening a matcha shop in 2025 is trying to be Tea Master. The new shops are trying to be something else, and the something else has a name and a year of origin. In 2016, two NYU graduates named Matthew Morton and Conrad Sandelman opened a place called Cha Cha Matcha on Lafayette Street in Manhattan. Pink and green walls. A logo that looked like it belonged on a candy wrapper. Drinks served in clear cups designed to photograph well in natural light. However, the template stuck. Every matcha shop that has opened in LA since roughly 2022 is, knowingly or not, descended from what Cha Cha Matcha invented in 2016. The branded interior. The single-product identity. The drink as content. The shop as set piece. The entire concept is derived around &#8220;be here, right now, and show off our product on your feed.&#8221;</p><p>This is the distinction I keep coming back to. Los Angeles has had matcha for a long time. What it hasn&#8217;t had, until recently, is the matcha shop as an investment category. Tea Master is matcha as a drink; Cha Cha Matcha is matcha as a concept; and the eleven shops that opened in the City of LA in 2024, plus the seven that opened in 2025, are almost all the second kind. They are not competing with Tea Master; thereby, they aren&#8217;t competing to make the best drink. They are competing with each other, in a format invented in New York eight years ago, in a city that already had a perfectly good matcha shop before any of them got there, to make the best aesthetic.</p><h4>3. The Wave</h4><p>From 2014 through 2021, Los Angeles got roughly one new matcha-forward shop every two years. Tea Master in 2014. Midori in 2017. Harucake in 2019. That was the pace. Then something changed.</p><p>In 2022, two new shops opened, including DAMO in Koreatown, which is the place credited with introducing the matcha einsp&#228;nner (a Korean-Viennese cream-topped latte) to LA. In 2023, two more, including Community Goods on Edinburgh, the Melrose-adjacent shop that became known for hour-long lines and where you can brush shoulders with Justin and Hailey Bieber. In 2024, eleven shops opened in the City of LA proper. Eleven. More matcha-forward shops opened in that single year than in the entire previous decade combined. Stagger Coffee in Koreatown went viral on TikTok within weeks of opening for a thing called the &#8220;double matcha,&#8221; which is matcha mixed with matcha topped with matcha. Kettl Tea, the acclaimed Brooklyn Japanese tea importer, opened a Los Feliz location with a four-seat reservation-only tasting counter. Matcha REN opened in the Arts District. Olive &amp; James opened on Melrose with colored matcha drinks in pink, purple, and blue. Bonsai Bar opened in Sawtelle with a signature drink that was matcha plus an espresso shot. And those are just the ones with press coverage or who had their moment in the sun on Instagram.</p><p>In 2025, seven more, plus a handful that landed in the surrounding cities I&#8217;m not counting in this essay. Emma Chamberlain, the YouTuber, opened her own caf&#233; in Century City. Alfred Coffee, the LA chain, opened a separate concept called Caf&#233; Matcha in Studio City that serves no espresso at all, only matcha. Archives of Us opened in DTLA in a 2,500 square foot space designed by an architecture studio, with caneles arranged in the pastry case like a museum installation, and matcha sourced from a single Kagoshima farm growing a rare cultivar called okumidori. Be Bright opened on Melrose, with a second Koreatown location announced for the fall. DAMO opened a second store in the Arts District. In 2026, so far, Matsu Matcha has opened in Koreatown, taking over the storefront previously occupied by a tea shop called Creek Tea, which closed. Matcha Cafe Maiko, a Hawaii-origin chain, has announced an LA location with no opening date and no address.</p><p>This is City of LA proper, and a conservative count. It does not include the Cha Cha Matcha that opened in Beverly Hills in 2026, the Maruwu Seicha that opened in Culver City in 2025, the Matcha REN that opened in Arcadia, the Cha Cha Matcha that exists in West Hollywood, or any of the dozens of caf&#233;s that aren&#8217;t matcha-forward but added matcha drinks to their menus to ride the wave. The wave is bigger than what I&#8217;m describing. The number I keep coming back to is eleven, because that&#8217;s the year the curve breaks, but the real shape is closer to a hockey stick than a step.</p><p>The thing that strikes me, going through this list, is the sheer variety of the formats. A reservation-only tasting counter. A YouTuber&#8217;s vanity project. An espresso-free diner. An eyewear-and-matcha hybrid (Memorylook, which I forgot to mention earlier and now I have to mention parenthetically, which is itself the problem this essay is about). A 2,500 square foot architectural showpiece serving caneles. These are not operators converging on a winning format. These are operators trying to differentiate from each other inside a category that did not, four years ago, exist as a category. Sprinkles was founded in Beverly Hills in 2005 by a former investment banker named Candace Nelson, who had been a contestant on the Food Network. It was the first dedicated cupcake bakery in the country, and for a while it was a phenomenon. People stood in line on Santa Monica Boulevard for hours. Oprah featured the red velvet on her show. At its peak, Sprinkles had thirty-something locations across the country, a cupcake ATM, a packaged-mix licensing deal at Williams-Sonoma, and a brand recognition number that any specialty food entrepreneur would have killed for. On the last day of 2025, every remaining store closed simultaneously, with no advance notice to staff, who learned about the closure when their shift managers got the email. There was no severance. The phrase &#8220;abrupt cessation of operations&#8221; appeared in the trade press. Sprinkles is what happens to the company that defines a category when the category turns out to be smaller than the company.</p><p>The arc of the cupcake bubble is worth holding in your head as you think about matcha. Crumbs Bake Shop, the New York-based competitor that went public in 2011 at the absolute peak of cupcake mania, was bankrupt by July 2014. That&#8217;s three years from IPO to liquidation. LA has hundreds of specialty coffee shops now and most of them are functioning businesses. So the pattern isn&#8217;t deterministic. Sometimes the cultural moment really does become a category. The question is what makes the difference and will it last.</p><p>The answer, mostly, is whether the thing becomes a daily habit or stays an occasional treat. Specialty coffee survived because it became something a meaningful number of people drink every morning. Larger brick and mortar coffee shops were deemed essential during the height of the Covid pandemic. Cupcakes did not, because nobody eats a cupcake every morning, nor are they essential in day to day habits. Matcha is being sold, in most of these new LA shops, at seven to nine dollars a drink, with cream tops and dessert flavors and sometimes literal jelly, in cups designed for the camera. This performative at best. The product itself, in its quieter forms, is plausibly more like coffee than like a cupcake. But the shops that are opening right now are not selling the quiet form. They are selling the loud form, the cream-topped form, the camera form. The form that, historically, people get tired of.</p><h4>5. The Moment, and the Aftermath</h4><p>Here is the part that changed my mind from &#8220;this is a fad&#8221; to &#8220;this is a fad with a deadline.&#8221;</p><p>In the spring of 2024, the wholesale price of first-flush tencha, which is the leaf that becomes high-grade matcha, was about &#165;5,500 per kilogram at the Kyoto auctions. The average Japanese tea farmer is in his mid-sixties. Roughly 80 percent of the country&#8217;s tea producers exited the business between 2000 and 2020. Climate volatility has been damaging the shade-grown tencha harvests specifically. New tencha plantings take a minimum of five years to produce harvestable leaf, and nobody is rushing to plant. Somebody saw the cultural moment and decided that this was the right time to plant a flag in it. Maybe they will be right. Maybe their shop will be one of the ones still there in 2030, and I will be wrong about all of this. I genuinely hope so. The product is good, the operators are mostly trying their best, and there is nothing in this essay that should be read as wanting people to fail.</p><p>But the math is the math. The lease is the lease. The supply curve is the supply curve. And the storefront density that LA is currently building for matcha is the kind of density that, every time we have seen it before, has not lasted. Some of these shops will be there in 2030. Most of them, I think, will not. The empty windows that we see in 2030 will not be a story about matcha.
